A wonderful, simple and elegant experience!!!
The story presents a day in the life of the typical low wage working class of India, who has to decide every moment of every day whether to live their diminishing dreams or to leave them completely. The intricate complexity of the primeval choice “To be or not to be:” is presented in a simple heartbreaking format in this story. The author uses some well defined phrases, like: “a seasoned crowd-piercer” or “The oil generators of juice machines leaked pitch black smoke into the air, making their own rain clouds” which immediately help the reader conjure up a picture of the environment in which the main characters interact. The story is short, but follows an undulating pattern, dialogues leading the way and helping the reader unfurl the financial destitute of the characters and the tightrope that Lata walks on. The end statement leaves the reader haunted and works as a backdrop to the entire story; kudos to the author for being able to distill such a powerful emotion in one simple line.
However, the emotional scene before the punch line of the story seems a bit rushed by in a flurry of “quick to tears and quick to laugh”. Also, it wasn’t made clear as to why the son couldn’t go to the fair with his parents. Possibly the outcome of the story would have been different then. But that’s another time and possibly, another story!!
